What happened to the cat, you ask? Never you mind. I know it may seem like our minds change quicker than the governor's seat in New York, but we have actually wrestled with this project on a daily basis. Really, it came down to a simple set of ideals of companionship and responsibility for our children. We wanted someone to protect the children while Jodi and I are somewhere on a beach. That way we won't have to get a babysitter. A cat is certainly not going to be bothered with that job. Imagine if those classic films like Air Buddy, or Incredible Journey, or Beethoven were about cats? The stories would be short and all they would do is lie around and snack on mice. But those films are beloved the world over because they were starring dogs. Dogs get things done.
When have you ever seen a cat come into town to tell people in the town square that there are kids trapped in a cave? I submit it has never happened.
We've decided on a Golden Doodle. Now, prior to our education on different breeds and temperament, I was under the impression that a "golden doodle" was what you trained your dog not to do on your carpet. But now I find that this is what a Golden Doodle is:

Cute huh? Well, that's how dogs work. Like children and household plants - they are sure cute when they are little, but when they get bigger you better water them or there is big trouble.
We are excited though. Our little companion is coming in from out of town. He lives in Oregon and is set to join us at Easter time. Why Oregon? I guess that's where the best doodles are made. It's nice to know that starting soon enough, however, there will be plenty of doodles in our front yard.

Hey, any family member of yours is a family member of ours.....right up until the 'Hey, we're going to San Diego for a week. How about watching Goldie for us?' line.
By the way, have you seen that ad for a weekly professional 'pooper scooper'? (starting week 3, when the boys can't be bothered to take care of him any more)
"Dogs get things Done" might be my favorite pet related quote of the evening. However, with respect to the "responsability for the children" bit, I am not sure that I have ever seen that last past a couple of months. More power to you if you can make it happen but, you just may want to factor the doodle in your long term care and retirement plans.
