No, I am not commenting on the recent thrashing of young adults who may or may not have been intoxicated while taunting zoo animals.
I have to make a comment about the current market condition. Why? because it's what I do. Sometimes I feel like the weatherman. Let's say you are planning your daughter's wedding reception. You've been planning it for 4 months. You've checked the historical weather reports, all the Farmer's Almanac's you could get your hands on. You checked with all the Indian Chief's in the area, did the sun dance, sacrificed neighborhood pets to appease the Weather Gods. One week out, you check your local forecast. Looks good, partly cloudy. Then wouldn't you know it, the day of her reception, a tornado rips through your backyard, pulling Tiki torches and bridesmaids up out of the lawn and leaving them strewn across a 3 block radius. You'll be finding pieces of lattice for weeks around town. Who is the first person who receives the wrath of your indignation? The weatherman. With all his knowledge, with all his experience, sometimes things happen, as terrible as they may be, that are out of his control.
I have the tremendous privilege of being a financial advisor as a profession. Despite all that I can do, sometimes the market does funny things. Like today. You may feel as though you are picking up pieces of your wedding lattice after today. But in actuality, unless your daughter's wedding really is tomorrow, you shouldn't be worried. For most of us, I would be so bold as to assume, our wedding day (read retirement) is a ways off. Don't get caught up in the fear of short term volatility. Patience, patience, patience. You wait and see, before long, we will be back on track. And the media will have moved on to another ignominious subject.
